Career Field/ Major

           In middle school, one usually does not know what they want to study but one is aware generally of their academic strengths and weaknesses. Throughout those years all I really knew was that I did NOT like science. In 8^th grade I had Mrs. Elbogen for English. I had heard before the school that she was a hard teacher. What did that even mean? I didn’t even know at the time what qualified as a hard teacher, but just like any other student would be, I anxiously awaited the September school year with much nervousness. Time went by and so did months of comprehensive learning. One experience that stands out for me is Mrs. Elbogen’s pet peeve of improper grammar. Since 8^th grade I have never confused than or then, well or good, and many more. My peers often found it annoying when I would correct them.

It was in Mrs. Elbogen’s class where I developed a passion for writing. After many constructively criticized papers, tears, and a lot of hard work, I had finally been confident in my writing ability. Mrs. Elbogen’s intelligence inspired me to become a persuasive and prodigious writer. I developed a strong relationship with my teacher because she saw how hard I worked to be an impressive English student and earn the grades I received. After that school year, Mrs. Elbogen retired. I wrote a speech about her as a teacher that the principal read out loud at graduation.

My passion also was influenced when I learned about the history of my home that I lived in my whole life. I never really understood who Christopher Morley was, why there was a parked named after him in my town, or his responsibility as a citizen. Growing up, I learned that Christopher Morley lived in my home and after reading many of his books I developed an ardent passion for literature and the art of writing. Through this I explored the arts and also learned that my talents in media and graphic design collectively have helped my writing. My journalism college experience will help me accomplish my dreams by preparing me for the challenges and effervescent times that accompany life. My experience will help me prepare for my exciting future!

 

Both Mrs. Elbogen and Christopher Morley influenced my feelings and opinions regarding my future career. Mrs. Elbogen taught me to appreciate the English language and the importance of self-expression. She had always encouraged reading of all types and loved to play scrabble. As the advisor of the scrabble club, Mrs. Elbogen had taught me to love different word games on all different mediums. Christopher Morley not only taught me about the history of my home but also of historically what was going on in my town at the time.

Rosie the Riveter is an iconic image of the United States, representing women that worked in the factories during World War II. This image is a perfect paradigm of women during World War II, showing their willingness to support the country, seen through their work. This image is actually ironic because the quote, “We Can Do It” is falsely represented by the lack of muscle shown on Rosie! This irony creates a trope through implying the opposite of flashing her muscles; however, her determination is seen through her austere facial expression. This image relates to my field of study as a journalism major, because I can do it! By enforcing the notion to not judge people based on appearances, race, or gender, this iconic image perfectly encompasses the enthusiasm and commitment one sees when taking on a new task.

Throughout high school I worked a lot with Photoshop, where I developed an ardent interest in the aptitude of visual images. Throughout contemporary society, each observer has his or her own way of interpreting different things. Some messages and themes throughout my work may be subtle, or obvious but each individual opinion will make the works influential and powerful.

Above is a collage of Jimi Hendrix posters. Jimi Hendrix was an efficacious musician, inducing powerful messages within his music. I enjoy this because each shows his ability through pictures to support a meaningful message felt and heard through his music. The bright colors in each poster strengthen his expressive and thought provoking music. The messages he portrays show ambition and intensity captivating the ideas of a generation. Just as Jimi Hendrix accomplished his goals, in life, I hope to captivate the ideas of this generation and express them through my writing and production of images. Just like his music during a changing time showed confidence and spiritual guidance for the present a future, I hope to do the same through my literature and images.
